In praise of Airbnb

Our recent trip to Stockholm marked the fifth time we have used Airbnb to find and book accommodation. Now we are a family of five (and even when we were a four) – we find Airbnb a cheaper, more convenient, and altogether more exciting alternative to a hotel. We have stayed in hotel rooms as a five, but we all end up getting hot and bothered…and sleep tends to be disturbed. Airbnb is a home away from home, and I really love it.

We have used Airbnb in London, Shanghai, Beijing and Cambridge, and all have been positive experiences. I love having a nosey at all the amazing places available, before finding somewhere within our budget! There are penthouses, wooden huts, city apartments, single rooms, lighthouses and everything in between. The variety of dwellings available is insane, you can filter for your needs and it means you get to live amongst the locals, which for me is the best bit.

Our apartment in Stockholm was particularly brilliant. It was the entire bottom floor of a three storey house, with a separate entrance – just five stops on the overground train from central Stockholm. Once I found out that my mum would be joining us, I emailed to check if she could be catered for, and the hosts said it would fine.

It was spacious, beautifully designed and great for children. The hosts had left origami for us to do (used for paper aeroplanes), adult colouring books with pencils, crochet hooks and wool, cookbooks to read and interiors books to swoon over. They had also left us some snacks ready for our arrival, and we stumbled across a disco ball which was great fun once it got dark.

Airbnb is so convenient for families because meal times aren’t set, and having a kitchen is really helpful. Some hosts won’t accept children, but the majority are family friendly. There are some really amazing places to stay, and I would always recommend contacting your host, and having a really good read of reviews before you book anything.
